"According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting represents 40% of the average commercial building’s electric bill. Responding to demand for more-efficient solutions, the lighting industry developed a wide range of energy-efficient products that can significantly reduce lighting energy costs while maintaining or potentially improving lighting quality. In new construction, energy-efficient lighting is the norm due to tightening energy codes. In existing buildings, older, obsolete systems are being upgraded as availability of older systems is eliminated by product regulations. The Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction was created to enhance the financial attractiveness of investing in the most energy-efficient lighting and other building technologies." Tax Deductions for Commercial Buildings
UPDATED June 11, 2009
"A tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available to owners or designers of new or existing commercial buildings that save at least 50% of the heating and cooling energy of a building that meets ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001. Partial deductions of up to $.60 per square foot can be taken for measures affecting any one of three building systems: the building envelope, lighting, or heating and cooling systems. These tax deductions are available for systems “placed in service” from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2013." Source: EnergyStar.com
Tax Deduction Versus Tax Credit
A tax deduction is a cost subtracted from adjusted gross income when calculating taxable income; tax liability is not reduced dollar for dollar, as is the case with a tax credit, but instead in proportion to the taxpayer’s tax bracket.
Utility rebates help offset the cost of retrofitting outdated lighting fixtures to more energy efficient ones. Rebates are available from the following Maryland utility companies: BGE and PEPCO. The amount of the rebate varies depending on the location of your business, but it can be as much as 50% of the project cost. Contact us and we will schedule an energy audit, followed by a free estimate of the lighting retrofit project cost and the projected amount of the rebate.
